Rice husk silica is expected to become a viable alternative to traditionally produced silica

Nov 28, 2025

According to market research firms, global demand for precipitated silica reached 3.1 million tons in 2023. The tire industry accounted for the largest share at approximately 37%, followed by non‑tire rubber products at 28%. Amid growing environmental awareness, a sustainable alternative-precipitated silica derived from rice husk ash-is gradually gaining traction.

Research indicates that demand for highly dispersible silica is projected to grow at a CAGR of about 7% from 2022 to 2027. This type of silica helps lower tire rolling resistance while improving grip, presenting significant growth potential for the tire sector. During the same period, demand from the tire and rubber‑based mechanical products industries is expected to increase by 4.9% and 3.8%, respectively.

Notably, rice husk ash-based precipitated silica is emerging as an eco‑friendly and sustainable alternative to conventional precipitated silica, drawing increased interest-particularly within the tire industry.

Industry sources also note that key domestic producers using the conventional precipitation process, along with several agricultural suppliers, have become major players in this field. Currently, a number of global companies are constructing or planning rice husk ash-based silica production facilities. Meanwhile, several traditional precipitated silica manufacturers are expected to launch their own rice husk ash-based product lines in the near future. These new projects will not only strengthen the global supply of rice husk ash silica but also support the sustainable development of the tire and broader rubber industries.

Despite its advantages, rice husk ash silica still faces constraints in meeting the tire industry's rising demand for sustainable fillers. For instance, production plants must be located near rice cultivation areas to keep transportation costs viable. In addition, growing industrial demand for rice husks could drive up raw material prices. Therefore, balancing a stable supply of rice husks with cost efficiency will be one of the critical challenges for the future development of the rice husk ash silica market.
