Silica and carbon black

Many people assume that " silica" is a black substance because of the word "black" in its Chinese name. In reality, however, it is a white,  powder primarily composed of silicon dioxide. Thanks to its unique properties, fumed silica is often called an "invisible magician" in the industrial sector. While it may look like ordinary powder, it holds the power to significantly enhance the performance of various products and plays a critical role across multiple industrial applications.

In terms of performance, fumed silica's most notable advantages lie in reinforcement and thickening. Often referred to as the "white brother" of carbon black, it enhances material properties while preserving visual qualities. When added to rubber, it can increase strength by dozens of times while maintaining a clean, white appearance. Everyday items like white sneaker soles and transparent silicone rubber products rely on this very feature.

Additionally, fumed silica possesses a large specific surface area and a porous structure, giving it a sponge-like adsorption capacity. It can absorb moisture and regulate viscosity with high precision. In paint production, it helps prevent issues such as stratification and sagging. In toothpaste, it significantly improves cleaning effectiveness.

Depending on the manufacturing process, fumed silica can be classified into different types such as fumed method silica and precipitated silica, each with distinct properties, purity levels, and suitable applications.

Fumed silica features an extremely small particle size of just 10–20 nanometers and a purity level of up to 99%. Due to its superior performance, it is commonly used in electronics encapsulation and high-end cosmetics. For example, in OLED device manufacturing, it helps extend the product's service life.

Precipitated silica, on the other hand, offers a more cost-effective solution and is widely used across general industrial products such as automotive tires and sealing components.

From industrial manufacturing to daily life, fumed silica is virtually everywhere. It enhances the wear resistance and slip resistance of car tires, contributes to the smooth texture of cosmetics, improves the durability of coatings, and ensures the stability and safety of pharmaceuticals. With a combination of advantages-including heat resistance, non-toxicity, and chemical stability-this remarkable material continues to elevate quality of life in countless invisible ways.
