While both precipitated and fumed silica are synthetic amorphous forms of silicon dioxide, they differ significantly in manufacturing process, properties, and optimal applications.

Performance in Rubber

In silicone rubber reinforcement, fumed silica consistently outperforms precipitated silica. However, precipitated silica can be an interesting cost-effective alternative for certain applications.

Bound Rubber Formation

Interestingly, precipitated silica adsorbs significantly more tightly bound rubber (16.71%) compared to fumed silica (3.72%) at 40 phr loading. However, fumed silica forms more prominent nanofiller networks that enhance the Payne effect and damping properties.
