Key Technical Properties of Silica for Rubber Reinforcement

Oct 06, 2026

The performance of silica in rubber compounds is determined by several critical technical parameters:
BET Surface Area: Ranging from 35 to 400 m²/g, this measures the total surface area available for interaction with the rubber matrix-
Higher surface area generally provides stronger reinforcement but may also increase compound viscosity.
CTAB Surface Area: This parameter (typically around 160 m²/g for highly dispersible silica) shows a better correlation with primary particle size and physical properties of filled rubbers than BET surface area

DBP Absorption: This measures the oil absorption capacity and indicates the structure level of the silica-higher values suggest greater reinforcement potential-

Particle Size: Ranging from sub-micron to several micrometers, particle size affects dispersion quality and final compound properties

Silanol Group Density: The abundance of hydrophilic silanol groups on the silica surface makes it prone to agglomeration in non-polar rubber matrices, requiring surface modification for optimal dispersion-

These technical specifications are the language of silica selection-knowing how to read them ensures you specify the right product for your formulation needs.
